News from the home-front of the house church movement in Phoenix, AZ.

Greetings!

First, congratulations to the Martins of ValleyLife on the birth of Caleb Joseph Martin. He was born on August 9, 2006 @ 4:40am. He is 7lbs 9oz and is 20.5 inches long. Click on the picture for more.

Last month we were enduring days in the 110+ range. Now we are in the middle of our monsoon season. While the heat has decreased, the humidity has increased. This is Arizona in the summer. Before we know it, Labor Day will be here and the fall season soon after that. I know that fall isn't a big deal here in Arizona, but it signals the beginning of the great weather that we look forward to. Thats what gives us bragging rights in the winter. You know what I'm talking about.

Recently a co-worker of mine suffered a heart attack while dining out. At the hospital, he suffered a stroke and had to be rushed to St. Joseph's for surgery. He came through the surgery and after almost two weeks in ICU, he is now in rehab. He is a Christian and has a strong belief in the power of prayer. I visited with him Friday and prayed with him. It looks like he is now on the road to recovery. No one knows how long that will be. Please pray for Phil and his family.

Again, I am asking for help in locating other house churches in the Phoenix area. I know that there has to be more out there that I don't know about but many of you may know of them. If you know of a group that is not listed on the house churches page of the website, please ask them to contact me to get them on there and to get them subscribed to the the newsletter. Thanks in advance for your help.

Prayer Requests (and Praises)
From the Phoenix house churches
Please remember these requests during your daily prayers:

- This update was received last week from Doreen at Jesus Cares Ministries who asked for prayer for her brother last month: "I requested prayer for my brother and I want to tell you that the results are nothing short of miraculous!!! It is too long to share, but suffice it to say that God is faithful. We are continuing to pray that the barriers he has allowed between him and the Lord will come down, but I can't believe the change. thank you so much.
another request: we are helping a woman flee a domestic violence situation this weekend. Please be in prayer for this woman and her three children to be safe and stand on the Rock for safety. Prayers for her husband, Greg to be broken by God and that he would turn from mocking to a heartfelt surrender to the living God. we appreciate the prayer. Doreen"
- This update was received from Rich Kraemer of Sonlight Home Church: "Jessica is doing much better. She is back to work, 3 12 hour shifts a week, at Del Webb hospital. We were able to get the rent paid and get a whole house air purifier that should help keep them all healthy. We want to say thank you to everyone who gave. It was a huge blessing."
- Praise God for the safety and health of the team from The Gathering during their trip to Phillipines and Taiwan. Pray for similar opportunities for the house churches in Phoenix.
- For the 16 year old daughter of one of our brothers to come to Christ.
- For house churches in Phoenix to continue to connect with each other for edification, accountability, and fellowship.
- For the continued success of the Alpha group being taught by Darrell of Big House.
- Praise God for a successful home sale and move for Henry and Cindy Stagg of East Valley Grace.
- For an East Valley Grace family who needs the head of the family to come to Christ and for a permanent job that will provide for their needs.
- For John and Debbie of East Valley Grace. John is now back in Phoenix and looking for employment.
- Pray the Luke 10:2b prayer and ask God to send more workers into His harvest field. Ask Him to send the house churches of Phoenix into His harvest field.
- Praise God that Darrell and Ralph will be going to the teaching conference in Arlington, TX in September. Pray for them and their families as the course is a full week.
- Larry's coworker Phil recovering from a heart attack and stroke in St. Joseph's Hospital.

If you have a prayer request that you would like to send to the Phoenix Area House Churches, please send an email to me and I will be glad to send it out with a newsletter.

About house church
While this article reprinted in part below may not be about house church, it is about revival, and where it starts. Credit goes to Russell Smith on The Eagle and Child blog, where the full text of the post can be found.

Resources for Revival: Family

... And then, last week I came across these great quotes from Spurgeon given in a May 27, 1875 sermon on Mark 1:29ff (the sermon is about how Peter's household becomes a home that impacts the entire region -- read the whole sermon here)

“We see before us small beginnings and grand endings. One man is called by the voice of Jesus, and then another; the house wherein they dwell is consecrated by the Lord's presence, and by-and-by the whole city is stirred from end to end with the name and fame of the Great Teacher. We are often wishing that God would do some great thing in the world, and we look abroad for instruments which we think would be peculiarly fit, and think of places where the work might suitably begin: it might be quite as well if we asked the Lord to make use of us, and if we were believingly to hope that even our feeble instrumentality might produce great results by his power, and that our abode might become the central point from which streams of blessing should flow forth to refresh the neighborhood.”

... “This first link of grace drew on another of much greater importance, namely, that the head of the family became a convert. Andrew sought out his brother and spoke to him of having found the Messias: then he brought him to Jesus, and our Lord at once accepted the new recruit, and gave him a new name. Peter believed and became a follower of Christ, and so the head of the house was on the right side. Heads of families, what responsibilities rest upon us! We cannot shake them off, let us do what we may! God has given us little kingdoms in which our authority and influence will tell for the better or the worse to all eternity. There is not a child or a servant in our house but what will be impressed for good or evil by what we do. True, we may have no wish to influence them, and we may endeavor to ignore our responsibility, but it cannot be done; parental influence is a throne which no man can abdicate. The members of our family come under our shadow, and we either drip poison upon them like a deadly upas, or else beneath our shade they breathe an atmosphere perfumed with our piety. The little boats are fastened to our larger vessel and are drawn along in our wake. O fathers and mothers, the ruin of your children or their salvation will, under God, very much depend upon you. The gracious Spirit may use you for their conversion, or Satan may employ you as the instruments of their destruction. Which is it like to be? I charge you, consider. It is a notable event in family history when the grace of God takes up its headquarters in the heart of the husband and the father: that household's story will henceforth be written by another pen. Let those of us who are the Lord's gratefully acknowledge his mercy to us personally, and then let us return to bless our household. If the clouds be full of rain they empty themselves upon the earth; let us pray to be as clouds of grace to our families. Whether we have only an Isaac and an Ishmael like Abraham, or twelve children like Jacob, let us pray for each and all that they may live before the Lord, and that we and all that belong to us may be bound up in the bundle of life.”

This is incredibly convicting and humbling -- for it suggests that spiritual renewal begins first and foremost in the family. The religious professionals don't orchestrate it. The powerful pastors don't decree a revival and everyone shows up -- it begins in the home -- the leaders of a home calling out to Jesus, inviting Jesus to come into the home, presenting the infirmities before the king, receiving healing, and engaging in acts of service. And from the home, the whole city gets curious and wants to know more.

.... So a key to the revival and renewal of the PCUSA and indeed our land is again learning how to make our homes little churches -- leading our children in prayer, extending hospitality to strangers, making our lives of faith lived out while we resist the fragmentation and hyperindividualism of the age. If this truth doesn't lead us to repentence and prayer (for I know I'm lacking), I don't know what will.

Comment: America needs revival, there can be no doubt. Part of the reason for this is that many Christian families are indistinguishable from their non-Christian neighbors. The need cited by Charles Spurgeon so many years ago is even more evident today. Revival has to start in the home. When we see this happening, we will surely see revival in America.

September and Labor Day will be here before you know it. There are meetings planned, trainings and conferences going on. Hopefully, we can have another city-wide potluck in September or October.

Thanks to those who have helped support the website and newsletter by making purchases through the links on the website. If you would like to see a specific retailer on this page, let me know and I'll see if they can be added. Or, if your house church would like to sponsor one or more months with a gift, email me.

I am planning a complete update to the website to make it more interactive. Hopefully I can get that done during the next month. If you have ideas for content, please email me. See you next time.
